Caya’s Dog & Cat is a neat little store in a cool historic building in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The store specializes in dog and cat-themed home décor and gifts like wall art, outdoor décor, t-shirts, candles, planters, kitchen, books, trinkets and even work from local artists and creators.
The store opened in early 2026, and we continue to expand our inventory. The store already has over 1000 unique items. We want you to have lots to choose from. Lisa spends hours searching for artists, creators, and companies who not only make great looking dog and cat decor but also has a good story. We look for good looking, quality, unique items that proudly show the love and meaning pets bring to our lives.
And the building really is a marvel to see. Build in 1887 and registered with the City of La Crosse as a historical site, the Magill Building has been home to a bank, a masonic lodge, a grocery store, and most famously Buzz’s Bike Shop, from 1980 until the building was sold in 2017. The building underwent major renovations, and in 2019 it was reopened, housing GreenHouse Holistic Salon & Wellness Co-op, as well as two beautiful apartments upstairs. The salon moved in late 2025, and Caya’s Dog & Cat opened in March of 2026 on the south side of the lower building.
ABOUT THE STORE OWNERS: Caya’s Dog & Cat is operated by Lisa Caya and her husband Fred. Lisa is the shopkeeper, and Fred manages the back office. Lisa is a born-and-raised, third generation La Crosse “Northsider”, and the couple raised their two children, Ted and Liz, attending Roosevelt, Logan Middle and Logan High School.
Lisa and Fred also own CayaTax, Inc, a small income tax preparation business began by Fred’s mother, Mary Caya, in 1949.
ABOUT THE DOG & CAT: The name and logo match Lisa and Fred’s two adored pets, Maggie, the orange and white cat, and Muddie, the black and white bernedoodle. Maggie and Muddie hang out at the store most days.
Caya’s Dog & Cat is a brand new store, operated by Lisa Caya and her husband Fred.
The Caya family has had a retail legacy since the late 1890’s, when Fred’s great grandparents Fred "Fritzy" and Mable Caya had a general mercantile store and saloon in Lynxville, WI. Later the store was operated by Fritz's son Ulric Caya, and then by Fred's parents, Walter and Mary Caya, who named it Caya's Corner Store. Mary also owned Caya's Corner Income Tax Service, preparing individual and farm tax returns beginning in 1949.
That store saw many eras, starting out with a hitching post outside to tie up the horses in the late 1800s, to serving meals to the men building the railroad in the early 20th century. It stayed open during the the Great Flood of 1965, and adapted to serve the needs of the small town, selling groceries, fishing gear, and was well known for it's aged cheeses and ring baloney. Walter ran the store, and Mary ran the tax business and the town post office.
When the small town grocery stores began to fade away, Walter took his love of animals and changed the store to Caya's Pet Corner. The store lasted until Walter passed away in 1994. Eventually the store building was raised.
We’re thrilled to add the name "Caya’s Corner" to this historic building and similar to the old store, Lisa runs the retail business and Fred runs the tax business.
We focus on decor and gift items for dog and cat lovers. We sell some unique and good looking dog and cat beds, toys, and pet owner supplies.
We run an old fashioned, brick and mortar (literally), in-person shopping experience. We do not sell online or ship items. We will hold items for pick up.
Yes we do! We sell old-school paper Gift Certificates in $25 and $50 amounts.
Lisa spends hours and hours searching for artists, creators, and companies who not only make great looking dog and cat decor, but also has a good story.
Factors we consider when choosing products and suppliers for Caya’s Dog & Cat:
The item looks good
The item is quality-made and feels substantial
The maker is a small, family company or individual artist/creator
The quality and uniqueness of an item match the cost
The item isn’t available on Amazon or other large retailers
The item is created locally, regionally or in the US.
Not all products will meet every criterion listed. These factors—along with others—are what we take into account when selecting a product or supplier.
I have enjoyed working retail all my life, helping customers find the perfect item and building attractive displays.
Over the years I’ve imagined having my own store, waiting for the right time and the right space.
Caya’s Dog & Cat is the result of these things coming together. With this beautiful building on La Crosse’s Northside and the idea of appreciating the love that pets bring to our lives, it all fell into place.
Thank you for your support. I hope you love it as much as I do.
